Cold-air Intake for MY00-07 MAP based Imprezas

Product Info and Background.

As I mentioned before, one of the advantages of this particular intake vs other intakes is that ours retains the stock airbox at the throttle body, which acts as an air-plenum or resevour of air for the engine. This serves two purposes - one is to absorb and eliminate intake pulse harmonics and improve the smoothness of the powerband and the other is as a ready supply of moving air to retain low end power when intake air velocity is lower.

The other big advantage of this intake vs others is that we supply cold air to the engine, not feeding the engine hot air from the engine bay. Why is this important? Simple, cold-air is more dense and contains more oxygen than hot air, so the engine can make more power when additional fuel is supplied automatically by the fuel injection system. It is said that every 40-60 degree drop in temperature will result in an additional 5-6% increase in power! That's as much as 5-10hp right there. There may also be gains from mild pressurizing the inner fender at higher speeds, and from the less restrictive intake tubing for more top end power.

So, How does it perform?

After resetting the ECU, we noticed a noticeable improvement in power throughout the entire powerband. We have no "wheel hp" dyno testing at this, however we can compare known performance figures, and we do have a Road Dyno Test here showing 9 hp in gains (dyno results below 2,500 rpm are not reliable). People have reported as much as a 0.5 second reduction in both 0-60 and quarter mile times as well, and approximately a 1 second improvement with intake and exhaust and crank pulley. Top speed when stock is reported as 127 mph by Sport Compact Car Magazine, while an HKS 4 psi turbo RS did 135 mph. Here a comparison of top speeds "reported to me" with my intake tested at 6,000 feet above sea-level - stock vs with intake and or exhaust.

Stock - 120 mph down hill at 6,000 feet above sea-level at 5,350 rpm.
With a 2" PVC Intake and Stromung 2.25" catback exhaust - 123 mph flat ground at 6,000 feet at 5,500 rpm.
With the Version 4, 2.5" Aluminum Intake (see picture below) and Stromung 2.25" catback - 132 mph flat ground at 6,000 feet at 5,850 rpm. And,
With the Version 4, 2.5" Aluminum Intake and no exhaust mods - the top speed was still 126mph.

A 12mph gain in top speed is significant, especially for those of us living at high altitude. And, compared to the stock intake, there is NO comparison! This pulls much better. One member of the iClub with this intake and an exhaust took a trip from Colorado to Kansas and hit 6,000 rpm at 135 mph with his RS!

Performance of the 3" version we now sell is as good or better than the 2.5" version that was tested, since the stock airbox inlet is only 2.31" internal diameter. However, the Stage II upgrade with a modified hi-flow airbox has shown improvement and is available above. This upgrade would work with any GanzFlow intake from Version 1-5, and even the stock intake tubing, but has not been formally tested for wheel HP. I don't advocate driving at these speeds, but they are good examples of the power gains obtained with fast cold air rushing into the air vent in the right inner fender. You can find more info about these intakes, with positive reviews and feedback from dozens of customers at the Impreza Owner's Club Forums.

Here is a new customer testimonial we recently recieved:

Subject: top speed with your intake

The intake is performing wonderfully now. Everything seems to have really settled down with the computer and exhaust. My 0-60 times are down to 6.9-7.1 now and 1/4 mile down to 14.9-15.1 (Gtech Pro). And I hit 130 yesterday (5850 rpm) in less than 1 mile and it was still accelerating. Temp was a nice 35 degrees. 800 ft elevation. Top speed should be close to 135 now.
Other power mods are K&N filter and Stromung cat-back.
Thanks,
Bryan
