Chalak High Power Synchromesh Gearsets - rated for 450hp, or approx 370-405 ft/lbs of torque.

THIS SYNCHRO SET IS A MAJOR, LONG AWAITED BREAKTHROUGH - all the discussions and drooling for the right street gearset are answered and delivered with this set. How many of you are going to take your car past 450hp? Not me, I'm happy at 320-360hp at the flywheel, really. Even the low 12 second WRX's are only at 400hp. Well, a gearset is rated against its weakest gear and in the case of the Chalek synchro set they rate the set at 450 hp/400ftlb (1st gear is rated at 850hp and second at 650hp)!

Impressive! Just have a look at their beefy mainshaft with 1st and 2nd vs a stock shredded main shaft 2nd gear.

(NOT to be confused with any previous “factory replacement” Chalek synchro gears that were not designed for high horsepower applications.)

All their mainshafts are manufactured billet and stress relieved prior to heat treatment. Heat treatment is comprised of a gas carburising method with an average of a 0.030" case depth and case hardness post to tempering of 58-60 HRC and a core hardness of 40-42 HRC. They incorporate unique tooth profiles that result in optimum efficiency strength. As can be seen they eliminate the double synchro set up in 3rd and use the single with hub and synchro's included in the conversion.

Available for the Impreza 2.5RS version 1 and 2 tranny and WRX tranny (just specify which year and model you have) for $4,250 Australian Dollars. At current conversion rates 0.9338, cost is only $3,970 + $179.95 S&H to your door from Australia (plus any applicable duties and taxes through US customs). This is $500 less than the nearest competetor! Updated 04/15/08.

For an accurate quote you can use http://finance.yahoo.com/currency?u to convert the $4250.00 Australian dollar into your currency preference. Payment to Subarupalnet.com will be in US Dollars.

Addendum - Some background about gears...

In Australia, Chalek dominates the WRX market and 90% of dog sets on the street are theirs, so they know every advantage as well as disadvantages. The disadvantages have forced them to design and manufacture the synchro set, and to keep the dog sets purely for race sales. Chalek does not and never has recommended dog gears on the street, and the dogbox gear sets they sell are always intended for the racers. And, their gears hold up to the toughest abuse in the Tony Rigoli 10 second Subaru WRX!

Other companies may push dog gears and convince people they are what they need, but that may be because they have no other choice, whereas Chalek DOES have a choice in offering this latest synchro design. The main reasons Chalek tries their best to steer people away from dogs on the street is due to dog wear and the special driving style which needs to be applied under normal driving circumstances. In their vast experience with gear sets, a dog box is purely for race and nothing more.

IMHO, trying to heel-toe and rev match with double clutching on downshifts is very distracting, makes it hard for others to drive the car, and is an motor vehicle accident waiting to happen! In the long run, the dogs will wear out before the gear breaks. The synchro is the greatest thing to happen to the Subaru to this date. So my answer is, unless you are a serious race customer and I mean serious, don't even ask for dogbox gears. I want our customers to be happy for a long time not a short time and replace dogs, and not get tired of grinding and gnashing gears.

Yes, dog gearsets are fine and the ultimate race gearset. They will shift at any rpm with ease and handle large amounts of torque and hp and are basically the only alternative for "excessive" power applications. They are guaranteed against gear breakage. But, regardless whether they break gears they are a major headache and hassle on the street both for the user and dealer. What happens when dogs wear, which they do? OK you may say that it comes back to the driver. I am sure that not many people want to have a nice car and have to think about matching gears all the time and being the only one that can drive it.

Again, these gears are intended for those who want a drivable street car, with the reassurance that the tranny will take power levels produced by the current breed of RS-T and WRX out there, when driven like a street car (autocross, occasional drags and track days included). Sidestepping the clutch at 6,000 rpm is not recommended in any car!
